Tandem bicyclists hit by car in Clearwater

Posted: Updated:

Clearwater Police need help identifying a man and woman on a tandem bicycle hit by a car on the Memorial Causeway.

At 6:18 a.m. on Monday, a passing motorist spotted handlebars in the road and called police.  The two cyclists were later found, badly injured, in a grassy area on the side of the eastbound lanes.

The crash shut down the eastbound lanes of the Causeway at Island Way.  They were re-opened to traffic around 11:10 a.m.

Both victims have life threatening injuries, according to Clearwater Police Spokeswoman Joelle Castelli.  The female victim was airlifted to Bayfront Hospital.  Paramedics drove the male victim to St. Joseph's Hospital in an ambulance.

Investigators say neither victim had ID.

Police say they don't have a description of the driver or vehicle that hit them.

Anyone with information on the suspect or victims is urged to call Clearwater Police at (727) 562-4242.
