Durham man sentenced on child porn charges

Posted: Updated:
DURHAM, N.C. -

A Durham man who pleaded guilty to one count of distributing child pornography was sentenced to over 15 years in prison, the Department of Justice said Thursday.

Jack Steven Vanlaar, 56, of Durham, was reported to authorities by a social networking site after an image of suspected child pornography was posted on that website. Law enforcement said Vanlaar used peer-to-peer file sharing networks to send and receive child pornography from Nov. 22, 2012 to Feb 23.

The United States Postal Inspection Service investigated Vanlaar and later seized and analyzed his computer equipment after obtaining a federal search warrant.

Vanlaar pleaded guilty to distribution of child pornography, a charge that carries a minimum prison sentence of five years. United States District Judge Catherine C. Eagles sentenced Vanlaar to 190 months imprisonment followed by 15 years supervised release.

The judge also ordered Vanlaar to forfeit two computers used in the offense.
