St. Petersburg Pier replacement to be decided by many

ST PETERSBURG, FL (WFLA) -

Wednesday marks the start of a brand new push to build a pier that will replace the aging structure on the St. Petersburg waterfront.

The so-called  "8/28 alliance," named after Wednesday's date, presented a document to Mayor Foster, outlining how it would like to go about selecting a new design for the pier.

The Mayor is now reviewing the document, which lays out the guidelines for how the selection process will be carried out.

The Mayor has stated, "We can do better, and we will," referring to the doomed "lens" design.

Figuring out what will replace the decaying inverted pyramid will be the task of a local jury pool, not an international design team. Public input will be the cornerstone of whatever is selected.

Councilman, Steve Kornell said the new pier must stay within budget, and be an attraction for families and teens. "And I'm in favor of a process that ends up with several designs presented," he said. Kornell said the people should have a chance to decide. "Another referendum because I think people can feel good about it," he said.

Instead of starting at "square one" on this project, the Pier Advisory Task Force's 2010 report will be a basis of any ideas, with some modifications.
