KINGSPORT, TN (WJHL) -

Kingsport Police and Fire were called to a home off Camelia Avenue up in flames Sunday morning.

"We both pulled our fire extinguishers out of our trunk which were useless," said Kingsport officer, R. Mills.

When crews arrived they knew they would battle flames, but didn't know people were still inside.

"People were yelling there were kids in the house," said Mills.

Chief Craig Dye told News Channel 11, "people outside screaming about kids in the house pointed to the window, the back window on the side."

Before the fire department could extinguish the fire they tried every angle to get the children out.

"We looked for a way into the house, we tried through the back, but we couldn't get up the stairs from the back," said Mills. "the smoke was terrible."

With no safe way in they had to improvise.

"We ended up busting this window out with a fire extinguisher, the fire department got here, entered the house and got the kids," said Mills.

Michael Croans who witnessed the fire said he, "knocked the back window out, where that ladder is back there, helped the fire department and got the kids out."

Two children were pulled from the burning house and "handed me to the boys out of that window," said Mills.

The two children and a male resident are being treated at a local hospital while investigators continue to look for a cause.

"Up to a point where people are injured, which makes it more intense on the investigation we bring in law enforcement and we do a joint investigation," said Dye.

Chief Dye said the home is a total loss.
