DADE CITY, FL (WFLA) -

Pasco deputies shut down Jessamine Road in both directions Thursday night after heavy rains washed away part of the road.

Officials say a hole opened up and swallowed about half of a lane of the roadway near the intersection with Jim Denney Road.  As deputies were arriving, they say the hole in the road was still growing.

Traffic was diverted around the scene.  On Thursday night, Corporal Gennis Folsom said the hole was about 30 feet wide and 15 feet deep.

Deputies were careful to say that this is not a sinkhole, but rather a "washout".
