Lightning strike causes fire at Brandon school

Posted: Updated:
BRANDON FL (WFLA) -

A lightning strike to the roof of Mintz Elementary School in Brandon started a fire this afternoon that left behind damage in four classrooms.

Hillsborough County Fire Rescue crews responded to the school and found smoke coming from one of the classrooms and the roof. Firefighters cut a hole in the roof and found flames that were quickly put out.

There were active thunderstorms in this area before and after the incident, Fire investigators say that lightning was the cause of the fire. There were no students at the school when this happened.

Four classrooms sustained water damage and the roof will need to be repaired where firefighters had to cut a hole.

Clean up and repairs are already underway and classes will resume in the morning.
