Thief swipes Ronald McDonald House donations

Posted: Updated:
HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, FL (WFLA) -

The Tampa Police Department and Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office are working together to catch a thief.  But this isn't your run of the mill bandit.  Detectives say he's stealing from sick children's families.

They say over the past several weeks, the man has stolen numerous Ronald McDonald House donation boxes from McDonald's restaurants in the City of Tampa and in Hillsborough County.

They say, in each case, he only makes away with a minimal amount of cash. They say when it comes to crooks, this guy is the worst of the worst.

"I always said there is some honor among thieves," Said Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office Detective Larry McKinnon. "But this one has to be at the lowest rung of the totem pole."

The sheriffs' office is currently working a case involving a McDonalds on West Waters and the police department has a case involving a restaurant on Armenia Avenue in Tampa.

Authorities say some of the thefts have not been reported, so they believe there are others.

Both agencies recently released surveillance pictures showing the bandit in action.

"I'm hoping someone knows this guy," Said Tampa Police Detective Harry Augello. "That either works with him, maybe a former girlfriend, former friend, family member, a neighbor, anybody. Somebody has seen this guy.  I'm sure he doesn't live in a hole somewhere, although I wish he did."

The man is described as a white male, 22-29 years of age, 6'-6'2", 170-190 lbs., medium complexion, medium build, short black hair and brown goatee.   He was last seen wearing a pink t-shirt, blue shorts and brown flip flops.

Anyone with any information on the suspect is urged to call crimestoppers -- that number is 1-800-873-TIPS.
