Evening storms pound Pasco neighborhood

Posted: Updated:

Dark skies and strong winds took aim at the Tanglewood Mobile Home Park in Holiday Wednesday evening."It sounded like a wrecking ball and a freight train and it goes woof!" said resident Henry Brandau.

After Brandau picked up his mail  strong winds picked up his roof. "And I came and sat, looked at my mail. Next thing I heard a big noise. The roof came off the porch. Light was in the house, I was looking out the door and next you know, my carport just disappeared," he said.

What's left of the roof over his sunroom and carport was strewn across the neighborhood Wednesday night. A large piece of aluminum was wrapped around a home one street away. The owners will get quite a surprise when they return.

And nearby there was more roofing in a canal.

Brandau can't stay at his home anymore. There are two areas of concern that will need a building inspector, and as a precaution, fire crews cut his power. "The neighbor right across from me, he got his whole roof ripped off. So maybe I would have gotten something pounded in and maybe I wouldn't be here or something else would have happened," said Brandau.

His theory is a pond across the street provided a clear shot for the wind, carrying off parts of his roof.

Just up the road, Pasco County crews worked to clear a large tree blocking traffic. The rain-soaked ground combined with nature's fury was just too much for the tree.

All this was a good reminder how summer storms are not something to be taken lightly.
