Cost of new theater in Cary continues to rise

CARY, N.C. -

It's being billed as one of the crown jewels of Cary's downtown revitalization.

"The Cary" theater is close to being rehabbed but it comes at a cost that's far more than was originally planned.

The remodeling came with an initial price tag of about $3 million. But construction costs and project changes brought the total up to around $6 million.

The Town of Cary decided to add a concession stand, which added another $150,000 to the final price tag.

All the money is coming out of a multi-million dollar fund set aside to revamp the quiet downtown area in an effort to bring in more foot traffic.

"We continue to keep an eye on the budget and right now we are within budget," said Project Engineer Eric Simpson.

Town leaders admit Cary could have done a more efficient job budgeting the project.

Construction crews began to put up the theater's marquee Wednesday.

The theater is on schedule to be ready for movies and theater productions by the end of the year.

The Town of Cary hopes to lease the upper floors to tenants interested in renting the historic area.
