Elite 8: Javon Harrison | Kathleen High CB/WR

When Javon Harrison was a kid, his mother gave him the nickname "Pig" because he was always eating out of the family refrigerator.

Now, the Kathleen senior is hungry for making the big play. Whether Harrison is playing wide receiver or cornerback, when he gets the ball in his hands, he always has the potential to make it to the end zone. "I've got to be the playmaker. I've got to make the play. Just get it and go. Get it and score," he said.

Before Harrison's sophomore season at Kathleen, his coach, Irving Strickland had a message for him.

"If you work hard," Strickland recalled saying, "you're going to find yourself your senior year going to any [college] you want to go to. He just looked at me like, ‘Yeah right, coach.'"  Maybe Strickland was so confident because of Harrison's 6-2, 205-pound frame, a perfect size for cornerbacks.

So, the college coaches did call.

Harrison committed to Virginia Tech. He chose the Hokies not just for the program's history of producing NFL defensive backs. Harrison likes Tech because he wants to earn a degree from its prestigious engineering school.

But before Harrison goes to college, he thinks this will be the year Kathleen breaks its 20-game losing streak to rival Lakeland.  "It's going to happen," he said. "It's just a guaranteed win."

Bold words.

If that happens, Harrison will play a huge role.
