Elite 8: Corey Martinez | Tampa Catholic RT

Updated:

When Tampa Catholic coach Mike Gregory first saw Corey Martinez as a freshman, Gregory knew he was looking at a future offensive lineman.

"He just had a presence about him, obviously his size," Gregory said of the 6-4, 300-pound Martinez.

"He came in as a freshman and started every game for us. It's just unbelievable to have a guy that technically strong, that sound and that big."

That's why it's a common sight to see Martinez put undersized defenders on their behinds. "To me, that's one of the best feelings an offensive lineman can have," said Martinez.

"I would not want that big sucker coming at me, that's for sure," said Gregory.

His knack for pancake blocks made Martinez one of the most coveted offensive lineman in the country. But his recruiting experience was rather stress-free. In July, Martinez decided to make an early commitment to play for Florida State. "All my life, I've been an FSU fan growing up and watching them on TV."

Martinez also grew up watching pro wrestling. Not only is The Rock the celebrity he wants to meet the most, Martinez will raise one eyebrow and do his Rock impression quickly if asked.

With his size, perhaps wrestling is in Martinez's future if football doesn't work out.

It's not like switching sports is new to him. Martinez grew up playing baseball most of his life. His father and uncle played the sport professionally, and Martinez plans to play one more season on the Tampa Catholic baseball team and be a designated hitter.

But first, Martinez is hoping for a successful finish to his high school football career. "Just take it to states, that's the big thing every senior and every team wants to do," he said.

Everyone loves a good donut. But not the ones Jena Slinkard bought Thursday night at gas station in Sarasota. She just wanted a yummy, powdered donut late at night. So she bought a few packs, but when she bit into her normal favorite, Hostess Donettes, she spit it right out.
