Fayetteville Police identify pedestrian killed on Raeford Road

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -

Fayetteville Police have identified the person killed while trying to cross Raeford Road on Monday night.

Officers with the department's traffic unit identified the deceased pedestrian as Sylvester Eskridge, 64, of Wayside Road in Fayetteville. The investigation revealed that Eskridge stepped into the path of a 2004 Ford near Duke Road around 8:15 p.m.

Eskridge was transported to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center where he later died. The driver who hit him will not face any criminal charges the police department said.

The accident highlights why Fayetteville is working to improve safety for pedestrians.

"We're looking to include pedestrian signals as a part of the traffic signaling. That increases safety for pedestrians quite a bit," said Lee Jernigan, Fayetteville's Chief Traffic Engineer.

Right now Hay Street at Woodside Avenue in the Haymount area and Murchison Road at Fayetteville State University are in line to get crosswalks. Next on the list are several spots along Grove Street and Owen Drive.

"The challenge is going back and retrofitting facilities to include those accommodations when really the original designs of the roads never included accommodations for that," Jernigan said.

Another challenge lies in the fact that most of Fayetteville's busiest roads are maintained by the state Department of Transportation. So improvements have to be approved on the state level. Jernigan said the city works with the DOT as much as possible to make improvements when and where needed, but the city often must defer to the state.
