Frustrated Orange Co. state senator Kinnaird steps down

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -

State Sen. Ellie Kinnaird has decided to resign from the North Carolina Senate, she said Monday, to focus on helping make sure North Carolinians have the necessary identifications to vote.

Kinnaird, a Democrat from Orange County, said she was frustrated by not being able to accomplish anything in the most recent session, where the Republicans have firm majorities in both houses of the General Assembly.

She told WNCN her time would be better spent getting citizens prepared to vote after laws were passed that she called "voter suppression."

"Our goal is to contact every person in this state to make sure they have the proper voter ID," she said.
