Jurors hear Ethan Self's explanation of night he killed his father

After the prosecution rested their case last week, defense attorneys for Ethan Self began calling up witnesses Monday, and played a tape of his interview with a psychologist.

Self is charged with first degree murder in the death of his father, Roger Self, in 2010. Roger Self was a Sergeant with the Greeneville Police Department.

Defense Attorney Herbert Moncier played a video, recorded by Dr. Abraham Brietstein, for jurors Monday morning. In that video, Ethan Self said he took his father's gun into his bedroom only because he was afraid of him, claiming Roger Self had abused him for many years. He says he was going to tell his father he was moving to his grandmother's house, and was afraid how he would react.

"My only intention with that gun was to just maybe scare him," said Ethan Self in the video, "so he wouldn't hit me, I wasn't going to shoot him, it was an accident, and I never should have even picked the gun up."

Ethan Self said his father was asleep at the time, and when his father snored loudly, it startled him, causing him to fire the gun by accident.

"If I could take it all back, I would," he said, "because I never meant to hurt him or cause him any pain, and I wish it would've happened a different way."

Ethan Self then told the psychologist that he tied the gun to a brick, threw it into a pond at a Greeneville park, and then ransacked the home to make the shooting look as if it had happened during a break-in.

Prosecutors have argued that Ethan lying about the shooting, then trying to cover it up, shows it was a pre-meditated murder, not an accident.

Testimony in the trial will continue Tuesday.
