Fake calls from credit unions in Tampa Bay try to steal info

Posted: Updated:

If you've gotten a call from a strange number over the past couple of weeks and it's someone from a credit union or a bank asking to verify credit card information, it is probably an attempt to steal your information.

This latest round of calls comes from someone claiming to be with the Suncoast Schools Federal Credit Union. The credit union workers have been bombarded with the reports from their customers about this scam. They say if you get a call from someone claiming to be them, do not give out your information.

"What these fraudsters are doing is they're reaching out to consumers in an effort to persuade them to provide their  account information, their debit information or credit card information," Linda Fales with Suncoast said. "PIN numbers and passwords and once they receive that information from a consumer, then they use it to conduct fraudulent transactions."

And it's not just the Suncoast dealing with this problem. The Winter Haven Police Department recently sent out a notice that customers and non-customers from a bank in  their area, the Central State Bank, were getting the exact same messages and text messages.

So what do you do if you get a call from someone claiming to be from a financial institution asking for that personal information? The advice is really simple: hang up.

Never give any information out over the phone from unsolicited calls, because no financial institution will ever call to ask for information. The best way to protect yourself is to hang up and call the bank personally to verify the call.  Make sure you call the public number of the bank.

And if for some reason you have given out your info, call the bank immediately.

"There's a variety of things, they need to do, one of course is to block the card they've provided the information," Linda Fales with Suncoast said. "They need to complete reports to credit back into their account and most importantly, they need to let their family and friends when they receive these calls, do not respond to them."
