BLUFF CITY, TN (WJHL) -

News Channel 11 now knows the identity of the man who the Sullivan County Sheriff's Office says tried to run over two officers Sunday night and who died after officers fired shots at him.

A Tennessee Bureau of Investigation spokesperson confirmed the man's identity Monday morning. According to the TBI, officers shot Roger David Street, 58, Bluff City. The Sullivan County Sheriff's Office confirmed the man who was shot died from injuries he suffered during the shooting.

Chief Deputy Lisa Christian with the Sheriff's Office said Bluff City police and Sullivan County deputies were responding to a car crash on Egypt Road Sunday night.

They arrived to find a driver had hit three other vehicles with his car, she said.

Christian says the driver ignored commands from officers to exit his vehicle, then tried to run them over.

One of the officers was knocked down and another was pinned between two vehicles.

That's when they fired at the man, according to Christian.

"It was a threat to life, to their lives," said Christian, "and so they were forced to fire on the suspect."

A TBI spokesperson says three deputies opened fire and shot Street.

Christian says two officers suffered "superficial injuries" and are expected to be okay.

The suspect was transported to a local hospital where he later died, the Sullivan County Sheriff's Office said this morning.

The officers involved have been placed on administrative leave, which is normal protocol for an officer involved shooting, according to Christian.

The sheriff's office is expected to release more information at a press conference at 2:00 pm today.

We'll continue to track updates in the investigation on wjhl.com and on WJHL.
