Polk men arrested on charges of making, selling illegal moonshine

POLK COUNTY, FL (WFLA) -

Polk County Sheriff's deputies arrested three men who they say were making and selling illegal moonshine in Haines City area.

Deputies served search warrants to Joe Aaron, 73, Rickey Lamar Barnes, 31, Jacob Reed Mayes, 28, on Thursday.

During the search, deputies found a moonshine still, moonshine jars and containers, different still equipment and items used to flavor moonshine, like pineapple, apple pie, and peach flavors. They also found some drugs and drug paraphernalia.

The still was in a bathroom near a dirty sink and a toilet in Aaron's home, according to the PCSO report. Deputies say the moonshine appears to have been distilled from grains.

"The illegal moonshine racket in Polk County is alive, but not-so-well," said Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd. "Popcorn Sutton would not have been proud of these bootleggers—it wasn't a very sophisticated operation, but they were producing, distributing, and selling illegal moonshine in the area."
