Winter Haven athletic director charged with sexual battery

Posted: Updated:

Police have arrested the athletic director at Winter Haven High School after two women claim he touched them inappropriately during a community event at a lake.

Police took Steven Lamar Beasley from the school in handcuffs on Thursday.

Investigators say on July 27th, Beasley was at a community event called "Flotilla" on Lake Howard. The event involved numerous boats anchored off the lake's shoreline.

During the event, police say Beasley approached a woman in the water, hugged her against her will, and put his hand down her bathing suit bottom. After she pushed him away and swam off, detectives say Beasley approached a second woman and put his hand in her bathing suit bottom. She also told him to stop, and swam away, according to an arrest affidavit.

"Both of the victims report that they trusted this athletic director because of his position and their knowledge of him," said Winter Haven Police Chief Gary Hester. "It's very disturbing to have this type of conduct taking place between someone in a position of authority there."

Police say Beasley was acquainted with both victims, in part due to his position as athletic director. Both women are adults and are not students.

Beasley will face a judge for the first time Friday on charges of sexual battery and attempted sexual battery. Until then, he will sit behind bars.

He has been the athletic director at the school for the last 6 years and has been an employee of Polk County Schools since 1990. He's now on administrative leave while police conduct the investigation.
