FWC reports hundreds of panther sightings in last year

Posted: Updated:
TALLAHASSEE, FL -

Florida residents reported 790 sightings on the website launched by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission to help track the endangered animals.

The FWC launched the website a year ago so that people could submit information about when and where they saw the panthers or the tracks.

The FWC officials said only 12 percent of the reports submitted included a picture so FWC biologists could evaluate them. They confirmed most of the animals on the pictures were panthers, but there were also bobcats, foxes, coyotes, dogs, house cats and even a monkey, according to the FWC.

People saw most of the reported animals in the southwestern part of the state. FWC officials said, that was a known breeding range for the panthers. Some were spotted in south central Florida.

Darrell Land who heads the FWC's panther team thanked people for participating in the reporting.

"The public's willingness to share what they have seen or collected on game cameras is incredibly helpful and shows us where panthers presumably are roaming in Florida," he said.

He warned as the panther population grows they may appear in parts where they have not lived for decades.

If you see one in your neck of the woods, you can report it here.
