Durham Rescue Mission holds 'Back to School' event

DURHAM, N.C. -

More than 4,000 people lined up outside the Durham Rescue Mission to be a part of one of the biggest events the charity hosts, the annual Back to School Party.

About 4,000 backpacks packed with school supplies will be handed out to needy children in the area. 3,000 of them were donated by GlaxSmithKline.

Some families got in line as early as midnight and 1 am to ensure their spot.

The CEO and founder of Durham Rescue Mission, Ernie Mills, says this is their biggest event of the year, and it's a way to make sure every kid can start his or her year off right.

"Our goal, as always, is to provide children with the tools they need to get excited about going back to school, all of which is possible because of our generous sponsors and tireless volunteers," said Mills.

Organizers rang a back to school bell at 8:30 a.m. to kick off the event.

In addition to the free backpacks, volunteers who arrived at 7 a.m. also prepared 10,000 free hot dogs and free clothing.

If you would like to donate, you can do so on the Durham Rescue Mission's website or call 919-688-9641, ext. 5024. If you would like to volunteer, contact the volunteer office at 919-688-9641, x5025 or email volunteer@DurhamRescueMission.com.
