Winter Haven police warn about fake bank texts

Posted: Updated:
WINTER HAVEN, FL (WFLA) -

Detectives with Winter Haven Police want to let people know about a possible phone text scam using the name of CenterState Bank Wednesday morning.

Detectives said, the bank was in no way involved with the scheme. According to WHPD, current bank customers and other Tampa Bay area residents received a text message Tuesday from the bank saying that their account had been compromised. The message asked the receiver to call a different number to solve the problem.

Most of the people who received the message went to the bank branch and sorted it out. But one customer called the number and gave some information about his account, police said.

Bank representatives helped that customer close the account.

Police remind anybody who may receive calls or texts from financial institutions not to give any account or credit card information without confirming with the bank's local branch first.

Police say people should not respond or call back. Those who have received such messages should contact their bank immediately.

Melanie and Jeffrey Cornwell should have been getting a tax break for years on part of the homestead property in Dunedin they call their "little piece of Heaven." But due to a mistake at the Pinellas Property Appraiser's Office, they won't see any rebates for previous taxes, just a break on future tax bills.
