WAKE FOREST, N.C. -

A 12-year-old girl's room lit up with fire Monday night after lightning struck a house on Clapton Drive in Wake Forest.

The family that lives there says the lightning struck the side of the house, and the current carried through the house into a top story bedroom.

Their 12-year-old daughter said the thunderstorm woke her up, and it was while she was in her mother's room that the lightning hit. When she went back toward her room she says she found her bed on fire.

"I was almost there, I was in the hallway, and I heard this huge pop right from my room, and I saw my room light up," the daughter said. "[My parents] ran to my room, and I heard my mom scream ‘There's a fire'!"

Fortunately the family escaped unharmed and no one was hurt. The mother said that before firefighters arrived, the daughter got her 3-year-old brother out of the house as her parents shut every door in the house to contain the blaze to the bedroom. The family says they have house insurance.
