St. Pete stabbing suspect pleads guilty

Posted: Updated:

A St. Petersburg man has pleaded guilty to domestic violence and the attempted first-degree murder of his girlfriend.

Police say Robert Lee Burton Jr., now 22, beat and stabbed his girlfriend, Melissa Dohme, 32 times. Police arrested him in Jan. 2012.  Dohme survived the attack, thanks to a first responder.

His attorneys had argued that Burton Jr. was not competent to stand trial.  After reviewing the opinions of several doctors, a judge decided Tuesday that he was competent.

Burton Jr. then plead guilty to the charges.

The judge can sentence him from 96 months up to life in prison.  A sentencing status hearing is set for Tuesday, August 20th at 8:30 AM.
