UPDATED (11:23 p.m.) :

We're told that both southbound lanes of Interstate 81 in Rockbridge County have reopened, following the 41-vehicle accident involving six tractor-trailers near mile marker 196.

(10:46 p.m.)

Virginia State Police have given us new information regarding an accident involving 41 vehicles in Rockbridge County on Mile Marker 196 of Interstate 81 Southbound.

Police say the initial crash took place around 5 p.m., when a vehicle suddenly braked, causing a chain reaction of crashes stretched over a mile and a half. They say the bad weather in the area -- heavy rain paired with dense fog -- caused poor visibility in that area of the interstate at the time of the crash.

Several people were taken to Carillon Stonewall Jackson Hospital, and one person was airlifted to Roanoke Memorial.

No fatalities have been reported, and none of the injuries are believed to be life-threatening.

State Police say at least 8 additional troopers had to be called in to assist with the scene, along with multiple fire and rescue crews.

VDOT estimates that one of the southbound lanes will be reopened between 10 p.m. and midnight.
