Crews to remove burned Tarpon Springs shrimp boat

Posted: Updated:
TARPON SPRINGS, FL (WFLA) -

Crews worked on removing the partially submerged burned shrimp boat in Tarpon Springs sponge docks Wednesday morning.

The 85-foot shrimp boat Skye Marie caught on fire and burned to the hull in May.  The owner Bill Harris, a local fisherman of almost 40 years, said the boat was not insured. Fire officials declared it a total loss.

Clean-up crews contained about 2,200 gallons of an oily water mixture from the docks. US Coast Guard assisted with the clean-up to ensure that there was no pollution threat.

The boat was not a threat for local navigation, which is why authorities kept it in the docks for almost three months.
