RALEIGH, N.C. -

A Wake County detention officer turned himself into authorities Wednesday morning after being indicted on a voluntary manslaughter charge following the death of an inmate at the Wake County Detention Center in June.

Court documents show officer Markeith Council was involved an incident with Shon Demetrius McClain at the Wake County Detention Center June 4.

Council was indicted Tuesday and turned himself into the Wake County Detention Center Wednesday morning.

McClain, 40, died from blunt force trauma to the head, neck, spinal and brain, damage that was sustained during the fight with Council, according to an autopsy. The inmate died 13 days later.

McClain was in jail on misdemeanor drug charges when the assault occurred. According to the Department of Public Safety, McClain's convictions include possession of stolen goods, breaking and entering, larceny, indecent liberty with a child, failing to register as a sex offender and obstructing justice.

Council was initially placed on administrative duty pending the outcome of a review by the State Bureau of Investigation. Colon Willoughby, the Wake County District Attorney, aided with the investigation.
