Reason for Pinellas drive by shooting remains a mystery

Pinellas County -

St. Petersburg police quickly arrested two suspects for a drive by shooting of a rental home Sunday night, but the reason for that shooting remains foggy.

DelJuan McKenzie, 18 and Latoria Martin, 23 are both in custody at the Pinellas County jail without bond on multiple charges of attempted murder.

"We're going to have to look very closely to see what may be going on at that house," said St. Petersburg police spokesman Mike Puetz.

The shooting happened just after 11:30pm Sunday when police say McKenzie shot up a house at 947 23rd Ave. S.  There were six adults and a seven-year-old by inside the home at the time of the shooting and another adult outside.

The bullets shattered windows and tore through the door and wall of the home but didn't strike anyone.

"We just had a couple of people with minor injuries from the glass," said Puetz.

Residents of the rental house didn't want to speak to reporters Monday except to say they had no idea why anyone would target their residence for a drive-by shooting.

Police say the home has been the subject of a "directed patrol" eight times over the past month due to suspected drug activity.

Neighbor Linda Rollins says noisy activity has become such a nuisance at the rental property that she packs up every night and stays elsewhere with her mentally disabled son.

"I'm afraid to be here at night there's so much going on," Rollins said. "I'm not trying to be a snitch but things are just not right."

Puetz says investigators believe that McKenzie was trying to settle some kind of score with someone at the house but the victims insist they are clueless.

"Everybody in the house claims they know of no reason why their house would be targeted and the suspects aren't particularly cooperative either," said Puetz.
