Scandal plagued Lakeland police receives accreditation

LAKELAND, FL (WFLA) -

The embattled Lakeland Police Department has received its national accreditation.

The department announced Monday it received accreditation from an organization called "Calea" over the weekend.

It comes at a difficult time for the department which is under scrutiny for a recent sex scandal that led to the resignations of several department employees.

During the accreditation process, the inspection team leader said there was no scrutiny or scandal, but rather practices and procedures.

Meanwhile, the Lakeland City Commission gave its support to the group looking into the problems at the police department.

The Citizen's Advisory Commission asked for the assurance during Friday's meeting. Panel members say there's an election coming up, and they want to make sure their advice won't fall on deaf ears.

Commissioners voted 6 to 1 in support of the group.
