FHP says driver cut off semi triggering I-75 pile up

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, FL (WFLA) -

An Arizona man has been charged with "improper lane change" for cutting off a semi truck on I-75 triggering an 11 car pile up in the southbound lanes of the interstate near the Brandon Mall on Saturday.

A semi truck, a Super Shuttle and 9 cars were involved in the accident. Seven people were transported to area hospitals, two of them in critical condition, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

One of the injured was a man who's car was wedged between the semi truck and a concrete barrier wall. Fire rescue officials say they had to call in heavy equipment to get the man out of his car which took about an hour due to the severity of the accident.  Ronnie Rivera is with Hillsborough County Fire Rescue.

"It was very difficult."  Said Rivera.  "We actually had to call a special tow truck from Stepps Towing to be able to help us remove the 18-wheeler, trailer, away from the car in order to approach the patient and extricate the car away from the patient. "

Rivera says 21 units with about 40 fire rescue workers responded to the scene.
