Clean up ahead for Pinellas residents after storms

Posted: Updated:
PINELLAS COUNTY, FL -

Some Pinellas County businesses have a mess to clean up after Thursday night's severe weather.  A waterspout churned in the Bay off the Gandy Bridge while severe thunderstorms moved ashore.

Several News Channel 8 viewers snapped impressive pictures of the waterspout around 7:15 P.M.  Strong downpours and hundreds of lightning strikes were reported on both sides of the Bay.

The Sahara Motel in St. Petersburg got hit hard by flying debris.  Huge sheets of aluminum from a nearby boat storage yard blew into the parking lot.  It landed on cars and took out a major feeder line that runs parallel to Gandy Blvd.

Thousands of Duke Energy were left in the dark after the storm.  A few dozen Pinellas homes were still without power Wednesday morning at 5 a.m.
