ST PETERSBURG, FL -

St. Petersburg firefighters responded to a house fire Monday and found a grow house in an engulfed bedroom.

They responded to a house on 54th Avenue North around 7 p.m. The house resident Gaetano Rodriguez, 27, who rents the home from his father, didn't want to let firefighters enter the burning bedroom.

Firefighters forcibly removed Rodriguez and broke down the door. Inside the burring bedroom they discovered almost 100 tiny pot plants and assorted grow house gear. It turned out an electrical problem started the fire.

Rodriguez is in the Pinellas jail on charges of cultivating pot and obstructing firefighters. SPPD spokesman Bill Proffitt says Rodriguez initially told police the marijuana was for medicinal purposes but later coughed up the truth and admitted he was just trying to make a little money.
