Two women arrested for counterfeiting in Pasco County

NEW PORT RICHEY, FL (WFLA) -

The Pasco County Sheriff's Office arrested two women in New Port Richey for making fake bills and using them at businesses in the county.

Sergeant Justin Ross works with the economic crimes unit with the sheriff's office. Ross says that as many as sixty cases came in from business and citizens that had been given counterfeit bills.

Tips also started coming in with possible suspects. Ross says they then had an image of one of the suspects captured on a surveillance camera at a Pasco Mc Donald's.

The woman was identified as Melissa Snipes. The sheriff's office caught up to Snipes and another woman, Laura Fossett at an Econo Lodge in New Port Richey. Inside the hotel room where the two were staying, detectives found a printer, ink cartridges, and printed money.

Sergeant Ross said that most of the bills were fives and tens. Just under $1900 dollars of fake money was found. Snipes and Fossett were arrested and charged with felonies for uttering counterfeit bills and forging bank notes.

Ross says most of the fake money was used at fast food restaurants and convenience stores. Some money was also traded by the suspects for larger bills to people in parking lots.

Ross says if you discover you have the fake money, turn it over to the sheriff's office. Do not to pass it along to someone else.

"It's important because if you know that you have something fake and you pass it off, it's a felony," said Sergeant Ross.
