Hillsborough deputies make arrest in hit and run

Posted: Updated:
BRANDON FL (WFLA) -

Hillsborough deputies have arrested a Land O' Lakes man and charged him with leaving the scene of a crash with injuries on Saturday night near the Brandon Mall. Donald Ward, 38, is accused of running a stop sign on Providence Road, crossing into the west bound lanes and striking another car driven by Anne Fanning, 23, of Valrico who was eastbound on the Brandon Parkway extension.

Fanning's vehicle caught fire and HCSO patrol units used 6 fire extinguishers to keep the fire from spreading to the cab of her car until firefighters arrived at the scene.  Fanning was transported to Tampa General and is in critical condition with internal injuries.

Deputies say Ward fled the scene on foot but was tracked down by a K9 deputy to a nearby retention pond where he was trying to hide from the deputies K9 dog.  The dog located him, grabbed his hand but he managed to break free and swim to the middle of the pond. He then surrendered and was treated for minor injuries to his hand.

According to deputies at the scene, Ward smelled of alcohol and refused to submit to a field sobriety test. Additional charges are pending toxicology results.

Melanie and Jeffrey Cornwell should have been getting a tax break for years on part of the homestead property in Dunedin they call their "little piece of Heaven." But due to a mistake at the Pinellas Property Appraiser's Office, they won't see any rebates for previous taxes, just a break on future tax bills.
