HOLIDAY, FL (WFLA) -

In Holiday at the county line, drivers entering Pasco might notice a new welcome sign that shows this is the home of Mike Ferrantelli, IPF Bench Press World Champion.

In April, Ferrantelli competed for the American team in Prague. He successfully bench pressed a record 578.8 pounds and won the gold medal.

Ferrantelli not only lives in Pasco but is also a captain for the Pasco County Sheriff's Office.

At the dedication for the new sign, Sheriff Chris Nocco says his office looks up to Captain Ferrantelli for inspiration.

"Because of his dedication, he has become a role model for many of our members to stay physically fit," Sheriff Nocco said.

Captain Ferrantelli says he started lifting in his teens but it was former sheriff Jim Gillum who got him into competitive lifting.

"[Gillum] said 'I want you to compete in power lifting'. I said yes sir and I left his office trying to figure out what power lifting was," Ferrantelli said.

Captain Ferrantelli says he enjoys teaching young athletes about power lifting and staying away from enhancement drugs even more than competing.

Ferrantelli says he, "went around to all of our high schools and some of our middle schools and did say no to drug seminars and I would also do lifting exhibitions and I would kind of tie it all in together about peer pressure."

Captain Ferrantelli says he is humbled by the honor of being recognized this way by the county. And he says this is for all of the people that helped him achieve his world champion title.

"You know it's really a tribute to my family, Pasco County and the citizens of the county. So I just want to say thank you very much for this opportunity," Ferrantelli said.

Ferrantelli says in three weeks he will be competing in Atlanta at the bench press nationals.
