Tampa bay area food banks work to fight hunger

Posted: Updated:
TAMPA, FL (WFLA) -

Think about this- how much did you spend on lunch today?

Many of us don't dwell on that too often, but the truth is, there are hundreds of thousands of people right here in Tampa bay who can't afford to eat.

And it's a problem that was addressed in a special forum on Friday.

National geographic photographer John Stanmeyer traveled the world to discover how people afford to eat, and he was shocked at what he saw.

He pointed at one photograph of a lonely, thin woman with a child. He said, "I ran across [this woman] and her child, they hadn't eaten in days because they couldn't afford food."

With the cost of food going up and up, nearly a billion people today are hungry.

Stanmeyer said, "[These photos] make people think, to realize the magnitude of how important it is for us to be able to afford food."

But this issue isn't just about our neighbors abroad, it's about our neighbors here at home.

Thomas Mantz, the Executive Director of Feeding America Tampa Bay said, "You know someone in your life today who is on food relief, you're just not aware of it."

Seven hundred thousand people in the Tampa Bay area are hungry. Or worse yet, think of it this way- one in four local kids are starving.

So that's why many of our area food banks collaborated together on Friday.

Mosaic held a hunger relief forum.

The purpose was to bring these local players to one table and see how they can work together to not only fight hunger but to create a sustainable food supply.

Mantz said, "Most people aren't even aware that it's that significant."

Mosaic also donated $120,000 to 12 local food banks to help in their mission, and hopefully this collaboration can help us win this war.
