Clearwater police make arrest in cabbie slaying

Posted: Updated:

Clearwater police have made a break in a nearly 5-year-old murder case. They announced Friday they charged 24-year-old Tisen KaShawn Washington with killing a cab driver Jack LaGrand in September 2008.

Washington is currently in the Pasco County Jail on unrelated charges. Major Donald Hall says a witness came forward and identified Washington as a suspect. Detectives believe the motive for the killing was robbery.

The murder happened early in the morning September 17, 2008. LaGrand, 51, was found dead in his cab. Investigators had worked the case since then and released new surveillance video of the scene earlier this year.

Clearwater Police Chief Anthony Holloway says detectives with the department's cold case unit are committed to solving unresolved homicides.

"Our main job is to try and find some closure for the families," Holloway said. "They may have lost hope, but we have not."

Authorities didn't tell if the witness who came forward was at the crime scene, or what his relationship to Washington is.

Major Hall says deputies in Pasco County are holding Washington without bond until Pinellas deputies can transport him back to Clearwater where he will face a first degree murder charge.
