Tampa Bay twins raise epilepsy awareness

Posted: Updated:
CLEARWATER, FL (WFLA) -

Hailey Scheinman, 8, and her twin sister, Livy, are best friends.

"I think she's the best person in the world," Hailey said. "I like her smile. She smiles some of the biggest smiles I've ever seen."

Hailey loves watching movies and cuddling with her sister. But Livy can't articulate her favorite things about her sister the same way Hailey can. Livy has epilepsy and cerebral palsy. She's wheelchair bound and can't talk.

"Epilepsy causes seizures which makes people shake a little bit in the arms," Hailey said. "You never know when you'll have a seizure. Livy tends to shake and sometimes her arms but mostly her chin."

Even though Hailey and her sister can't communicate traditionally, it's easy to see they have a bond. Hailey constantly hugs her sister. Livy can't speak words but she makes sounds.

"Twins have a special bond anyway," their father Jon Scheinman said. "But because Hailey is the way she is, and Livy is the way she is, they just have a great bond. They feel pain the same way. They get hiccups at the same time."

Jon believes his daughter knows what the family is doing for her. The Scheinmans created Livy's Hope to educate the community on epilepsy and raise money for research. Their most recent project is Lemonade For Livy Day on July 27.

Livy's mom, Allison Scheinman, says lemonade is a great way to bring kids together in a fun environment.

"It's very inviting and kids are really special," Scheinman said. "They're the first ones that will say 'what's she in a wheel chair for?' Kids don't feel that boundary. They want to know more. With the lemonade they can walk away with something sweet and educational."

Hailey might be the most excited of all.

"We want to get them inspired," Hailey said. "I think she's perfect. She's taught me to be inspiring and to have empathy."

Lemonade For Livy is Saturday July 27 at the Safety Harbor Montessori Academy on McMullen Booth Road in Clearwater from 12 to 3 p.m.

Melanie and Jeffrey Cornwell should have been getting a tax break for years on part of the homestead property in Dunedin they call their "little piece of Heaven." But due to a mistake at the Pinellas Property Appraiser's Office, they won't see any rebates for previous taxes, just a break on future tax bills.
