Williams Park pool in East Tampa re-opens after years of being closed

Posted: Updated:
TAMPA, FL (WFLA) -

Judy Davis is excited about the reopening the Williams Park pool on Osborne Avenue in East Tampa.

"I wonder if it's going to be open on the weekend?" Davis said.

Judy is excited her 6-year-old grandson Angelo now has a place to swim while he's staying with her this summer. She taught him how to swim. She taught her sons too.

"A lot of kids like to swim and they don't have to go far. It's right here in this neighborhood. They can come right here," Davis said.

The Williams Park pool re-opening has been a long time in the making. Four years ago city officials closed the pool after it failed to meet health and safety guidelines. Budget cuts threatened to keep it closed. Community leaders worked for years to bring it back.

"I'm glad I'm here to see the final touches. I've been poking my head in and out while construction was going on," said Rosalie Jones, a community worker.

Tampa city council member Frank Reddick said he went toe to toe with other city leaders to get the facility re-opened. The pool upgrades cost $1.3 million.

"The kids in this community have been requesting the pool. There's no outlet for them during the summer months and they just want to be a part of this and that's the reason I fought so hard on the city council to get it done. I'm thankful the mayor put the money in the budget to do it," Reddick said.

Florida pool construction did all the work and they say there is only one other pool in our area that has this state of the art a system The entire system is automated, meaning they  can check  the filtering, the pumping, the  water, and everything else from a remote location.

So all the kids can walk right into the pool safely, including Judy Davis' second grade-grandson, who she hopes will spend a lot of time enjoying their new gem.

"It's gonna give the kids something to do."

The pool will be open seven days a week until summer ends. After summer, it will open four days a week including weekends.
