ZEBULON, N.C. -

Dozens of special needs children and their families with the Miracle League of Johnston County got a chance to get out on the field at the Carolina Mudcats game last Thursday to meet the team and listen to the National Anthem.

"They were somewhat in awe of the field," Miracle League of Johnston County Director Monty McClab laughed. "Some of them kind of enjoyed the dirt a little more than others, but most of all they had a big time today."

"It was their chance to get out and experience things other kids don't get to.

The Miracle League is in the process of raising money for a special needs park and baseball field.

The complex will sit on about four acres at the existing Smithfield Aquatic Center and Community Park, which the county leased to the effort for $1 a year.

It will cost about $1.5 million dollars. The hope is to raise all of the money by the end of this year and begin the construction in the spring of 2014.
