WILSON, N.C. -

Sheriff's deputies shot and killed an armed robbery suspect after a chase ended in Wilson County.

Smithfield Police say a suspect robbed a convenience store and then hijacked a car before leading officers on a chase.

Just after midnight on Sunday, police say Garret Brooks, 28, of Roanoke Rapids, robbed a Kangaroo Express at 1137 North Bright Leaf Blvd. Brooks then ran from the scene of the robbery and hijacked a Jeep at the nearby American Pride Car Wash.

Smithfield Police say they were investigating the first robbery when the second call came in. By the time officers responded to the second call, the suspect had left Smithfield Police's jurisdiction.

Deputies say the shooting happened as the chase ended on N.C. Highway 42 near Interstate 95 in Wilson County. Wilson Count deputy John Harris and Johnston County deputy Robert Raetz fired at the Brooks after he crashed into a deputy's car.

Several police cars were damaged during the chase. There was no immediate word on injuries to any officers.

The SBI said it is still investigating the incident and did not say how many shots were fired or who fired at whom.
