Straight line winds caused Dover damage, not tornado

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, FL (WFLA) -

The National Weather Service says straight line winds are responsible for damage in the Dover area in Hillsborough County on Wednesday and not a tornado.

High winds knocked over trees and downed power lines around Jess Walden Road Wednesday evening.

On Thursday, the sound of chainsaws could be heard over a wide area as crews worked to clean up the damage.

Teri Pinkston said she had just finished working on her horse's hooves when the weather hit.  Pinkston said, "It got real black and hailing a little bit and then the wind was just whipping and whipping."

Large trees fell in Pinkston's yard and in the yard next door.

The wind also blew apart a section of her barn.

Pinkston said, "Shingles were lifting up, the trees were whipping and it was over in like ten minutes."

No one in her home was injured.  Her horses, bulls and dogs all survived without a scratch.

Not far away, Tom Derenthel was also feeling lucky.

Several large trees were down in his front yard, but none of the trees hit his house.  "There are three trees in the driveway, another one just about hit the house, just grazed it.   Another one just grazed the car port and we were extremely blessed.", said Derenthel.
