Power of pink punch comes to Tampa Bay

TAMPA, FL (WFLA) -

Since women's boxing made its debut at the 2012 Olympics in London there has been a tremendous spike of ladies pouring into boxing gyms.

"I've had more compliments in the past six months than I've had in regard of the way my muscles of tightened up and the way I look," said Melodie Jaffe who attends a high energy boxing class at Punch Fitness in Westchase.

A tough sport known to draw in men now has women hooked.

"I have more women in my morning class then men," said boxing expert Martin Vergara who teaches boxing at Punch Fitness.

Vergara says when you know the true skills of boxing you get a total body workout that leaves women with a lean body and sheds off pounds.

"It starts from your feet and works all the way up to your upper body, so there is not a single muscle group that you're not going to be working," Vergara said.

Women in the class say over and above the huge turn-around in fitness results, they also feel a sense of accomplishment and are able to take out day to day frustrations on the bag.

"I don't know, I kind of like being able to hit something and not get in trouble," Jaffe laughed, adding every time she leaves a class she just feels better.
