Strong wind causes damage in Hillsborough County

Posted: Updated:
SEFFNER, FL -

The Seffner and Dover areas are cleaning up Thursday morning after strong storms sent trees hurling to the ground and on top of houses Wednesday afternoon.

"The wind was so bad," said Teri Pinkston. "It was lifting the shingles up and it was hailing a little bit. It looked like a tornado."

Across about a five mile area between Florida Route 574 and Interstate 4, the damage was obvious. Power was out to more than 8,000 people at one point.

Pinkston didn't have it either, but that was the least of her worries. The storm tore the family's barn apart.

"That's the new part of the barn," she said as she pointed to a sheet of metal hanging from a tree. "The rest of it's on the other side and the neighbor's behind us - the roof."

Her neighbor next door, Laura Barnes, came home from work after a tree fell on top of her house, damaging her living room and bedroom.

"I'm like … where's my house? I'm thinking this is the neighbor's house then I realized this is my house with the greenery in front of it," Barnes said.

Five miles away on Walden Road, Maria Arrona was in tears after a tree crashed into her family home. She and her four sisters were all inside.

"Out of nowhere the roof started to lift up and the roof crashed down on the couches and everything and we all just tried to get out of the window and get out," she said. "My mom tried opening the door but it didn't so we ran to a room, we jumped out the window. We got the important papers. We all came to this house and they all got us inside there."
