BRADENTON, FL (WFLA) -

The Manatee Sheriff's Office has announced an arrest in the kidnapping and sexual assault of a 5-year-old in a Bradenton trailer park Monday afternoon.

Dominick Jerome Hawkins, 36 is charged with the kidnapping and capital sexual battery.

Manatee Sheriff Brad Steube said at around 12:30 on Monday, the man lured the little girl into the India Bazaar convenience store. A store manager said while there he bought her a baby bottle pop, a type of candy.

The attacker then took the girl to an abandoned trailer and sexually assaulted her. She got out and ran home. The man tried to board a bus to flee but the driver didn't let him in.

Detectives say they are pursuing leads based on the surveillance video from the bus and the convenience store.

Sheriff Steube said the little girl ran across a busy intersection to get back home. She has since been treated and is staying with family members. He mentioned MCSO hadn't released all details of the case yet, but when they do, "we'll all see this girl is lucky to be alive," he added.

The store manager of the India Bazaar is a friend of the little girl's parents. He put out a donation jar to help out the family.

Anyone with information is urged to contact the Manatee County Sheriff's Office at (941) 747-3011 or Crime Stoppers at (866) 634-TIPS.
