Ready to get your TN driver's license? Prepare to wait

JOHNSON CITY, TN (WJHL) -

Tennessee teens hoping to drive the roads this summer are getting a lesson in patience.

That's because the wait to take a driver's license skills test is at least two months.

The biggest reason - summer is the busiest time for eligible teens to apply.

The state has taken steps to cut down the wait, including adding temporary employees, and using commercial license examiners to help with road test appointments.

They are also working on a pilot program at other driver centers across the state to have police officers and retired troopers conduct testing to help speed up things.

While those changes haven't put much of a dent in the delay, there are ways to get in earlier.

"They can call the help desk hotline and check to see if there's an opening," says District 5 Driver Centers Manager Alex Barger, "or call their local station to see if there is an opening that day, see if they can get in."
