Tampa Police investigate robbery homicide at Family Dollar store

Posted: Updated:

Tampa police are looking for a robber who they say went into a Family Dollar Sunday morning and  killed the store manager.

It all happened on the 4900 block of North 40th Street.

On Sunday morning, locals around 40th street were in disbelief.

A stalwart of their community was gone.

Nearby resident Lannesha Drayton typically visits the store at that time of day. She said, "You never think it could happen to your local neighborhood store."

Officers say sometime around 9am, a man walked into the Family Dollar and demanded money from the employee behind the counter.

A manager, 49-year-old Horsley Shorter, Jr. was inside the office. When he saw the robbery police say he ran over to help.

The suspect then shot Shorter.

After the gunshot was fired, the suspect led the other employee at gunpoint to Shorter's car.

The suspect opened the trunk and ordered the employee inside.

The employee pleaded with him and the suspect eventually closed the trunk and stole the car.

After first responders arrived, Shorter was taken to Tampa General Hospital.

The 26-year Army veteran later died from his injuries, and the neighborhood lost a beloved friend.

Fighting back tears, nearby resident Tamika Jones said, "He was nice. You couldn't ask for a better person."

"[He was a] sweet, kind hearted person. [He could] keep you laughing. [He was] just was cool with everybody," said Drayton. "It's heartbreaking, ‘cuz everybody here is like family that live in this area, go to this Family Dollar. And all of ‘em, they nice people.  You wouldn't think anybody would come in here and rob 'em."

Drayton said, "They need to stop the violence. For a couple of dollars, it's not worth it."

For some of these neighbors, Horsely Shorter, Jr. was thought of as family. So this neighborhood wants the suspect caught.

Tampa police say the suspect got away in a white 1995 4-door Mitsubishi Mirage.

The car has no tint and no rims and the white paint is faded near the front.

The tag number is amzn75.

On the left side of the rear bumper is a ‘Save the Tatas' sticker; and on the right side is an Indianapolis Colts sticker. back right bumper has an Indianapolis colts sticker.

The armed suspect was wearing a black beanie, long sleeve thermal shirt, long shorts, dark blue boxers, and low white socks.
