Tampa bay fishermen land 700-plus-pound bull shark

ST PETERSBURG, FL -

A group of Tampa bay area fishermen who belong to the Freebird fishing team caught a 9-foot bull shark Friday night off the coast of St. Pete Beach.

Louis Bobelis and a group of friends are working towards becoming a professional shark hunting team and were originally fishing for a large, record breaking hammerhead shark when the bull shark took their bait. They were using a sting ray's wing for bait on 200 pound test fishing line.

Bobelis says it took nearly three hours to reel it in and get it to shore so they could take pictures of it. After they photographed the shark, they released it back into the gulf.

Bobelis says his team goes fishing for big sharks at least once a week and they are hoping to make a name for themselves as professional shark taggers. They estimate this bull shark weighed in at 750 to 800 pounds.
