Suspect charged in St. Pete tented home burglaries

Posted: Updated:
ST PETERSBURG, FL (WFLA) -

The tenting was supposed to kill termites but it didn't stop a burglar from breaking into Tarin Quigley's St. Petersburg home this past April.

"My husband was walking the dog the next morning and noticed a rip in the tent so we immediately called the termite company and they sent somebody in and it had been ransacked," said Quigley.

The Quigley's home was one of 12 robbed during tent fumigation in the last 5 months.

In June police arrested Candice Alexander when they say she sold some of the stolen items to an antique dealer. Police suspected her husband, but could not find him.

Monday they got a break. Police arrested 25-year-old Christopher Alexander after a homeowner reported someone trying to break in.

Alexander admitted breaking into a tented home, using a paper painter's mask to protect him from the poisonous fumes, according to police.

"They take their health in their hands when they do something like that because clearly they're inhaling these pesticides that could make them violently ill and he said it did, but that didn't stop him," said Mike Puetz, spokesperson for St. Petersburg police.

Police are also looking for 36-year-old Michael Murphy in connection with the burglaries.

Alexander is charged with a total of 6 burglaries, three of them in tented homes. He is also a suspect in several others.
