CARY, N.C. -

A portion of Cary Parkway was closed Wednesday afternoon while Hazmat teams worked to clean the scene of a chemical spill.

Cary Police say a call came in about a spill at the Town & Country Hardware store located at 2420 SW Cary Pkwy. around 1:37 p.m. Wednesday.

Susan Moran with the Town of Cary said between 200-200 gallons of sodium hydroxide solution, or lye, was spilled at the Parkway Pointe Shopping Center.

A driver was making a delivery behind the store when he noticed a container of the chemical had been knocked over a spilled inside his trailer, Moran said. Some of the solution spilled on the driver. He was transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The shopping center was evacuated for a few hours.

Authorities said the solution was kept from entering any creeks or water sources.
