Lakeland police captain retires amidst sex probe

Posted: Updated:

A Lakeland police captain accused of inappropriate sexual activity on and off duty and about to be disciplined for it, has decided to retire.

In a letter to Lakeland Police Chief Lisa Womack, Captain John Thomason said: "Given the circumstances I will close this chapter in my life and move on."

Thomason was part of a recent 8 On Your Side investigation into the Lakeland Police Department.

He's also part of an internal affairs investigation that revealed embarrassing details involving as many as 10 officers.

Among the allegations:  Thomason is accused of repeatedly asking a female employee to have sex with him in his office while both were on duty.

He's also accused of taking that same employee's phone into the police department bathroom and taking a picture of his penis, a picture she shared with others.

Thomason has been with the Lakeland Police Department for the past 28 years. His last day is this Friday.
